I designed a series for alkr®, called “Passionate People”. We will randomly portrait interesting people such as musicians, painters, screen printers, illustrators, photographers and designers and shoot them in their personal spaces. The first person featured is Giorgio Oehlers from Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Please introduce yourself.
My name is Giorgio Oehlers. I’m a 20 year old inline skater/producer/filmmaker from Rotterdam, Netherlands.

What is your passion?

I have a passion for three things: skating, making beats, and film/video editing.

How did this passion of yours start to develop/grow?
I started skating when I was 8 or 9, and I fell in love the first time. I was very young, so you could say that skating contributed to the development of the person I am today. Then, one day I was relaxing at a friend’s place, and his brother was making a beat. I was completely mesmerized. It was so cool, so I got my hands on FL Studio (formerly Fruityloops) and started making beats.

Meanwhile, I got to a point with my skating that I wanted to see what I was doing. I bought a camera, and I started filming and editing. One thing led to the other, and now I’ve nearly graduated as a video editor, I make beats for several artists, and I am a well-respected rollerblader.

What are the things in daily life that you use in order to further develop your passion, and what are other influences for you?

On the beats side, I work on a MPC5000 with a turntable and a huge pile of records. For film, I use a Canon 5d Mark II and Final Cut Pro for editing. And a pair of Remz skates to skate on.

What more can we expect from you?
A lot of music to start with. I’ve been doing a lot of work with different rappers from my city—big names and underground cats. I’m also busy with an instrumental EP that’s coming out soon, so be on the look out for that! And, of course, I’m always working on a new skate flick.

In the end where would you like to be/go with your passion and love?

I just hope I can make a living out of one of these three things and still have enough time to do the other two things as well. That would make me the happiest person alive!

<a

The New York Times put it into it’s most overused fashion words list which, seeing as NYT aren’t usually first on the fashion pulse, is really saying something. So, the question remains, where do we go from here?
That’s not a question Dickies ask themselves.

They see themselves as a workwear brand and always have. And, more importantly, they see workwear as it is – light years away from fashion or lifestyle brands. Up until a few years ago, they didn’t even have an archive. “Their archive was a cellar in a school building they owned” says Juergen Alker, who runs the streetwear wing of Dickies. “Down there was almost nothing, just a few items. It was just like a normal old cellar – pretty spooky actually.

Now they’ve started a real archive and they’re buying back pieces from Ebay and looking around vintage markets in order to get a little more history back to the company. When it was being made no one was thinking that they might need it in the future. We just do workwear, things change over time and you develop new stuff and you just don’t think you might need it again.”
They belatedly started their own archive and since then the European wing of Dickies, based in Hamburg, have been taking inspiration from Dickies archive rather than creating new products. “We don’t really design anymore, we just take pieces and twist them a little bit”.

While the Japanese wing of Dickies have taken a decidedly more high end approach to collaboration, working with the likes of Neighborhood amongst others, the European team have been slightly more low key, working with Stussy, Hideout, and Rebel 8 for collaborations. How did the US wing feel about these collaborations? “I showed the Hideout collaboration to our owners a few weeks ago. It was a very quality product at a fair price, That’s what he liked about it. And that’s what Dickies is about. Dickies was never about £300 shirts and it will never be, so that’s why he really liked”.

The Hideout collaboration has been a success and, as collaborations go, it’s how it should be – low key and focused on creating products that you’ll wear repeatedly as opposed to creating super clothes. Was the fact that Dickies already had access to great factories a helping factor in getting the product so well done?
“Sort of” replies Juergen. “We lost a little bit of that knowledge in recent years. Things needed to be cheaper for a long time and that led to poorer quality.

Now Dickies recognise that just being cheaper is not the way to deliver quality. So on this project we needed to find a new shirt company to do the shirts for us. It took pretty long, we’ve been working on that almost two years, from first meeting till it was out. But we needed to get it right. It was difficult to get all the fabric, and stitching done for the right price, but it’s worth the time. Rebel 8 took two and a half years because we had no factories for printing [The rebel 8 collaboration features a pair of trousers with a print on the inside]. We’d never done any sort of print before so we always learn new things when working with people.”

And, seeing as the US wing are so traditional that they didn’t even think of creating an archive until a few years ago, we have to wonder if they understand the streetwear side of things? “They don’t understand everything but they say ‘they don’t need to, thats what we have you for’. They don’t know Jason Jules and Michael Koppleman are because they’re not in this industry, they’re in the workwear business.

They say ‘you run the streetwear business, it looks good what you do’. They try to understand it, but they’re open minded. They look at it and say, ‘that looks good’. They saw pictures of the book launch and saw the hard work and dedication that went in there but they never heard of the people involved. They see that these are very passionate people towards Dickies and they try to understand but they don’t always get it. But they’re an open minded and fair company. They give me a lot of freedom and I pass that freedom onto whoever I work with. And that relationship works for everyone.”

Juergen himself is rather entrepreneurial, launching a smoothie brand from his living room and launching alkr®, his self named accessories brand. Prior to this he worked in an advertising agency as a client-facing consultant, something he found tiresome and, eventually, led to him becoming interested in a more immediate way of working.

“I used to have these meetings that would go on for with clients. So I had the client in front of me and they’d say ‘oh no, you need to make the logo bigger’ or something else relatively unimportant. I had meetings for hours discussing tiny things. We can talk about taste, typography or taking a picture differently but I’m not a photographer, so why should I argue about photography? Let the others do what they can.

I suppose my little own brand is very entrepreneurial because I started my own brand, a little business outside of Dickies.

”
That little business outside of Dickies is alkr®, the accessories brand he runs from his home. But what initially led to the creation of alkr® was another brand he launched. He launched Hej!, a smoothie company, from his home in 2006. He visited London and saw Innocent smoothies, noticing that there was a gap in Germany for a similar type of product. So he went home, bought a smoothie maker, made the smoothies himself, packaged them and personally delivered them to local delicatessens. He eventually grew the brand to the point where the CEO of innocent smoothies contacted him to find out more about the brand. And all this for something he launched as an experiment.

It’s this willingness to experiment that led to projects like the ‘Love your work’ project, which launched a few months ago.

A cross between a magazine and a book, it launched with an exhibition in London a few months back. “If we’d done that two years ago, no one would’ve showed up” says Juergen. “We’ve already requested if we could do the exhibition in other places in Europe, but we don’t want to overdo it. Plus, a lot of people did it just for the dedication and passion for Dickies. So we don’t want to exploit them and make it totally commercial when they didn’t get any money out of it. It was more for some clothes and goodwill than, ‘ok you’re a model, you get a lot of payment’ so this exhibition was intended as a big thank you.

I wanted to have something where you can have everyone, they get a few drinks, they can invite their friends and they can look at what they’ve done. But it was not intended as a roadshow, we just wanted to say thank you without standing there and having a big speech.”

They’re also leaving the door open for any future projects, but not saying much more, “We called it love your work project one, so there could be a ‘love your work’ project two, three, four. There will be next year for sure, but we don’t know how it’s going to look like. We didn’t call it issue 01, because then people would expect issue 2 but it might be something totally different. It could an exhibition only, it could be an event, who knows.”

So what about the collaborations? “The thing about these collaborations is that if we do them, we should do them on a longer term. Just do something with the right brands on a long term basis.” So they’ll be more hideout collaborations? “Yeah, could be. We’re thinking about that, it would be logical. Because it’s selling good, it’s perfect for Dickies, Michael likes it. So it helps us as a brand to learn, to elevate things we learnt a lot from it.

Dickies was never interested in being the cool brand. Which is why I think that’s why so many people like it, because they never tried to exploit it. If you’d been a celebrity and tried to get a pair for free, they’d just tell them to go to Wall mart and get it there.

If you’d been Jay Z and called up, they’d have just said ‘who is that?’ (laughs). They still see themselves as a workwear brand. They’re not a lifestyle or a fashion brand, we are workwear and we stick to that. And that’s why they like the Hideout collaboration, it’s just straightforward, good product, good quality.

”
So it’s just good clothing at a good price?
“Yeah”.

Without any conscious effort, Dickies has made itself a mainstay of streetwear for many generations. Given its rugged construction and timeless aesthetics, its popularity doesn’t come as much of a surprise. However, without a directed effort until recently, the Dickies brand has seen itself ripe for a new angle from a contemporary fashion standpoint. Two of Britain’s most formidable members of the so-called streetwear community, The Hideout’s Michael Kopelman and current Dr. Martens creative director Andrew Bunney undertook the task of creating a new capsule for Dickies with the goal of re-inventing classic Dickies-wear from a modern angle while maintaining the essence of Dickies. We took the opportunity to delve deeper and touch upon what exactly has become of the collaboration, what The Hideout for Dickies collection entails and the importance of Dickies’ Americana roots.

Hello Michael and Andrew, nice meeting you guys. First off, how did you end up in your respective professions and how long have you been in this industry?

Michael: Before The Hideout, I was really into DJing with a fond love for Stussy. Eventually through Shawn Stussy I got involved in the industry. It was amazing when I met Andrew because I would see him in different cities around the world… Tokyo and in New York just by coincidence. Also, the staff at my shop would groan about him as he would ask about products that weren’t out and had more knowledge regarding them as well. So that’s when I asked Andrew to consider working for me. I couldn’t believe that someone could be so well informed without working in the industry.

Andrew: I started as a buyer for skateboard shops, which is how I met Michael. Then I moved into vintage clothing and went on to study fashion and production. After that, I started working with Michael again and that’s how it got started.

<span

Then I moved into vintage clothing and went on to study fashion and production. After that, I started working with Michael again and that’s how it got started.

How did this project come about?

Andrew: Many years ago we were doing some projects with Stussy and very few people in the market were doing collaborations. If you were to ask companies out of the blue on collaborative projects, they would be very confused, at that time companies weren’t set up for that method of thinking. Obviously now is a very different situation and quite the opposite. We spoke with Dickies a long time ago, but nothing really happened. Until recently, we felt there was a gap in the market and we could fulfill it at an appropriate price point.

There are many cynical ways of why it’s much easier to approach brands now for collaborations. For a marketing perspective, it can generate sales very quickly. Also, I suppose back then, it was the time when the blog boom started, so companies could really see how many people had lined up to buy their sneakers.

Michael: The companies we approached back then were Dickies, Alpha Industries and Levi’s, as both of us were into utility products. You can put these together and wear it so effortlessly and it’s very accessible. The collection’s goal is to explore a different side to Americana. Both of us love the ivy and work wear looks that have been popular over the past few years. And a lot of my heroes and movies that I like, such as Animal House, The Outsiders, Rumble Fish, those kind of movies have all these references in it. I was born in the 60s, so I love that era/style. While we liked the way many Dickies’ products were currently designed, there were certain aspects of the clothing, which would be better and more accessible with correct adjustments. I always read blogs, and people are always complaining when something is changed for a collaboration and it doubles in price. Therefore, I wanted to do something where you make some really basic changes, such as the fits and stay more or less true to the original specs and price.

Read the rest of the interview here:<br

To make this Jean we use fine African cotton and expert Japanese construction to develop what we believe to be not only the most authentic denim product currently available but also the most reasonably priced.

Here is the process by which the California Selvedge Jean was created:

Zimbabwean Cotton
The quality of the cotton used to make the California Selvedge Jean is an extremely important factor in creating the best denim and also determine the value of our Jean. With this in mind, we searched the world trying to source the finest organic cotton.Zimbabwe is renowned globally amongst denim aficionados’ as the prime source of organic cotton. Zimbabwe has the ideal climate for growing strong, pure cotton and it is no coincidence we chose to use it for the production of the California Selvedge Jean.

The Selvedge Denim
After our cotton is harvested in Africa, it is shipped to Japan and woven into denim cloth. Our Selvedge denim is woven on vintage shuttle looms that are unlike the mass projectile looms commonly used around the world today. Our denim is woven in small batches with a red selvedge – the clean, bound red edge on the fabric. This process is much slower and deliberate, produces less material and more waste but the end result is that the denim is far superior in durability, texture and touch.

<span

This process is much slower and deliberate, produces less material and more waste but the end result is that the denim is far superior in durability, texture and touch.

Made in Japan
Once our denim is in place, we work with the worlds finest architects of denim. Throughout Japan, there are still a few select, small town family-run denim manufacturers, who posses a deep understanding of craft and expertise to perhaps even rival the tailors of Saville Row. We then carefully selected the best craftsmen to realize our California Jean. These artisans lend their expertise to the creation of our Jean, producing one-of-a-kind masterpieces. Dickies is the only American workwear brand for whom they manufacture, which makes our offering entirely unique.

The Philosophy
The California Selvedge Jean references a wealth of detail from the world of authentic American workwear. From taking note of classic cuts to the reproduction of original Dickies labels. The conceptualization and outcome of the California Selvedge encompasses the blueprint of what Dickies is, where Dickies came from and where Dickies have been: Quality American workwear!

In 2008 I met Dr. Revolt, a graffiti legend, and well-known photographer Ricky Powell, who helped me with my first small collaboration for Dickies, called “NY Legends”. Ricky, known around the world as “the fourth Beastie Boy”, has photographed some of the most well-known rap and hip-hop artists of all time. I was pleased to work with Ricky and three other living legends from New York on four t-shirt designs.

The four prints are based on pictures by Ricky and three are reworked by New York’s famous graffiti artists QUIK, DR. REVOLT and ZEPHYR.

DR. REVOLT was born and raised in New York and is an original member of the historic New York City graffiti crew The Rolling Thunder Writers (RTW). REVOLT is known for tags, elaborate pieces on the 1 line with psychedelic colors and comic art-influenced stylings, and later for taking it “all-city” with his contributions to the seminal hip hop films Wild Style and Style Wars, various music videos, and album covers. He created the classic “YO! MTV Raps” logo and did a tour of duty in Baltimore where he, like a “messenger of style”, single handedly kick-started a graff-scene that still feels his influence today. His place in the history of “graff-dom” is secure. His work has been, and continues to be seen in various publications and art galleries globally. DR. REVOLT lives in New York.

ZEPHYR was one of the pioneers of the New York subway graffiti movement from the late 70′s to the early 80′s. Today he has made a comeback to the scene, and proves himself, once again, a true graffiti legend.

QUIK was unable to play baseball as a child due to a troublesome arm injury. Instead, he went on frequent subway trips to see the games played. During these trips, Lin Felton (aka QUIK) became fascinated with the graffiti that covered the trains and stations. By the time he was ten years old, Lin was skipping choir practice to tag anywhere he could, quickly becoming the uncrowned “King of the Tag” in Hollis, Queens, where he grew up. QUIK’s work, which includes graffiti art and paintings and focuses on social injustice and racial discrimination, became recognized by the art world in the 1980s. He has exhibited in art galleries and museums in the United States and internationally. QUIK has also worked in the Netherlands, where he lived during the 1990s, as a director’s assistant, production coordinator, set designer, and actor in avant-garde theater. QUIK is currently working with the New York City Department of Education/Special Education division and actively continues his creative output along SEEN at SEEN Studios in the Bronx. He writes a monthly column the German hip hop magazine Backspin and has contributed text to many upcoming international publications regarding urban cultures and their artists. QUIK lives in New York.

<div
